Identifies Synthetic (Lab-Grown) Diamonds (CVD/HPHT Diamonds) including mounted diamonds, through measurement of UV absorption.
The Synthetic Diamond Screener is developed by Presidium to help screen out Type IIa colourless diamond, which is likely to be synthetic and created through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure high temperature (HPHT) syntheses, from the natural Type Ia colorless diamond.
When subjected to this deep UV irradiation, Type Ia and Type IIa diamonds each absorb different amount of UV light. Type IIa diamonds allow deeper UV light to pass through and thus its UV light absorption ability is low. This difference in the light absorption is significant enough to aid in differentiating between colourless Type Ia and Type IIa diamonds.

The Presidium Synthetic Diamond Screener II (SDS II), is only suitable for testing on known diamonds. Users can use a Presidium Multi Tester III (PMuT III) (Our Ref. TD56) to check on an unknown colourless stone before testing with the SDS II. Such, Moissanites, CZ, etc. is not suitable for testing with SDS II.
Recommended Operating Conditions
Only for Colourless Diamonds of:
- Colour Grade: D Colour to J Colour
- Carat Size: 0.1 carat to >10 carats
- Cut: For all cuts as long as the gemstone has a flat surface
- Mounted Jewellery: For jewellery with “open-back” setting
